An unhappy announcement: On Wednesday, April 5, 2000, Dr. William Caldwell passed away. He is survived by his wife Joan Leslie Caldwell, and their daughters Ellen and Patrice. Dr. and Mrs. Caldwell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary March 17, 2000. Our heartfelt condolences go to the Caldwell family.

July 3, 1999. Joan Leslie Page goes online at its new location in time for Independence Day. Here's a short list of some of the changes visitors will find here:
  • New address: http://www.picturegoer.com or http://picturegoer.com (both should work).
  • Improved design. All of the images are now thumbnailed for faster loading (for example, click on the photo on the left to view the image at full size). The navigation tool at the left no longer inhabits a frame.
  • The site is now searchable. Hit the "search" button in the navigation bar to find whatever you're looking for in the site.
  • More images and text. Several items have already been added and more are coming. We have three times as much disk space at the new location and the site can start to grow again (the old site had used up almost all of its disk quota).

July 24, 1999. I've been adding little items on an almost daily basis for about a week now. For example:

  • Several nice color photos were appended to the picture gallery (follow the "more images" link at the bottom of the main "images" page). Among the new items are another magazine cover and two slick magazine photos (one of them was used to create the Joan Leslie banner you see above).
  • Lots of freshly-captured movie frames from Joan Leslie videos. Some of these images aren't particularly clear, but they will have to do until I find better copies on Joan's movies. I hope eventually to have images from all of Joan's films.
  • Four neat fan mag articles: one a biography in photos from Movie Life, another a piece on Joan's work as a hostess at the famed Hollywood Canteen, still another a piece about Joan's activities at the time of her break with WB, and the last an account of a trip Joan took to New York in 1946.

August 21, 1999. A few more updates:
  • Finally got to see Too Young to Know, Flight Nurse, Hell's Outpost, The Woman They Almost Lynched (Great!), and The Revolt of Mamie Stover. All have been added (or will shortly be added) to the filmography section. Thank you, Joan Leslie!
  • Additions to the articles section: "If You Had a Date with Joan Leslie" (for Slim Greens everywhere) and "Joan Leslie...Symbol of Young America?" The latter, from the pages of British Picturegoer (from whom we have borrowed our domain name) is especially interesting, in that it paints a portrait of an unusually candid actress, critical of her own screen roles and studio. Proof again that Joan Leslie was and is her own best critic.
  • Still more images, among them two or three magazine covers (Stardom, June 1943, etc.). I've also included a snapshot of Joan Leslie taken in August of this year (it was upon meeting Joan for lunch in Santa Barbara that I learned how truly lovely the actress is).

December 11, 1999. A lot has happened since the last "what's new" entry. Here's a short list of some of the items I've added:
  • The magazine covers are Stardom,Motion Picture, Calling All Girls!, and Movie-Radio Guide. Make that fifteen covers in all!
  • Some new articles from the fan mags, including the pieces entitled "Acting is Fun" (from Young Life) and "Close-up of Joan Leslie" (the Motion Picture lead story).
  • One new addition to the filmography section: Northwest Stampede, which in available on video in Canada but not in the U.S.
  • Two or three new stills, including the odd shot of Joan Leslie with two other Warners starlets walking turtles, and some pics of Joan's sister Mary taken during the latter's stay at the Burbank studio.
  • The visitor poll (actually started in September).
  • And last but not least, I've restored the "Notes and Quotes" section (it was always a part of the original web site at UCSB, but is now incorporated at Picturegoer as well).

May 11, 2000. A brief list of updates:
  • The magazine covers are Motion Picture Star Album (actually added some time before), Star Weekly, and Collier's.
  • Other photos include several pinup of Joan Leslie, including the two images at the bottom of this page. See also the cute image of Joan Leslie in western garb for Northwest Stampede (page two of the image gallery). Thinking about adding a third page to the image gallery, or perhaps a separate pinup section -- let me know what you think.
  • Finally, there is a Message Board. Please post -- I'll get back to you all, I promise!

That's all for now. Kerry
