Joan Leslie, Film Star, Wed to L.A. Doctor Here

Joan Leslie, young blond film star, and Dr. William Caldwell, young Los Angeles physician, were united in marriage this morning in Our Lady of Sorrows church.

The ceremony was a typical family affair, with only members of the families of the two participants and a few friends in attendance. Nuptial blessing followed a low Mass.

The mother of the bridegroom, Mrs. George Caldwell of Los Angeles, said the couple selected Santa Barbara for the ceremony because they wanted a peaceful and beautiful setting, away from the usual Hollywood glamor.

Dispensation Obtained

Few of her friends knew of her plans as Miss Leslie was anxious that the ceremony be quiet, in keeping with the Lenten season. A special dispensation was obtained from the Archbishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles to permit the marriage during Lent.

Rev. James Lyons, Jesuit priest of San Francisco and a lifelong friend of the Caldwell family, officiated at the services.

The 25 year-old Miss Leslie, dressed in white with shoulder-length veil, was married under her true name, Joan Brodel. She was given in marriage by her father, Frederick Brodel of Burbank. Her matron of honor was her sister, Mrs. Mary Russom of Van Nuys, who dressed in brown.

Guests at Breakfast

Dr. Caldwell's bestman was Dr. Robert Flynn of Los Angeles, a fellow physician.

After the wedding the couple were the guests of honor at a wedding breakfast in the Samarkand Hotel. They had no specific plans for their wedding trip. They plan to drive up the coast leisurely as far as San Francisco.

The wedding culminated a romance, which started more than seven months ago, when Dr. Caldwell attended a member of the Brodel family.
