The story is better known today as An Affair to Remember It begins as a sparkling romantic comedy, with Boyer (a French playboy) and Irene Dunne (an American millionaire's mistress) falling in love on an ocean voyage to New York. After a stopover in France, during which Ms. Dunne is impressed by Boyer's grandmother (Maria Ouspenskaya), the lovers vow to divest themselves of their rich benefactors and meet at the appointed time at the top of the Empire State Building. Tragedy intervenes, and the second half of the picture
is rather melodramatic. Alas, if you're watching this for Joan Leslie, you'd better bring your microscope. She's one of the autograph hounds on the ocean liner.
Recommended, mostly for the superb performances of the two leads.
