A Hollywood movie star is a complex phenomenon, in part a composite image of the movie roles she's played and in part what the public knows of the private indiviudual through newspapers, tabloids and other media. Big Hollywood studios were adept at fashioning (or refashioning) both selves for public consumption, though in Joan Leslie's case the line between the screen image and the real-life person was particularly slippery (see for instance Hollywood Canteen, which practically eliminates the distinction). She was as sweet off the screen as she was on, fan magazines and newspaper items almost ritually proclaimed.
